Surname spellings

Researching surnames can prove a challenge. Names were often spelled the way they sounded and it depended on the person recording how the name would appear.

Imagine every different spelling of the surname possible when searching for your roots. Not all of our ancestors could read and write. A clerk or census taker may have changed the spelling of the name when recording a birth or other record.
